Viagra vs. Generic Sildenafil (And Cialis vs. Tadalafil): What You're Paying For

Osirius offers both brand-name Viagra and Cialis and their generics, sildenafil and tadalafil, and the brand names cost considerably more. So the fair question is whether the extra money buys you anything. Here is what the FDA actually requires of a generic, and where brand and generic can differ.

What FDA Approval Of A Generic Means

The sildenafil and tadalafil tablets offered here are FDA-approved generics. To approve one, the FDA requires the same active ingredient, strength, dosage form, and route as the brand, and proof that it is bioequivalent, meaning it delivers the drug into your bloodstream at the same rate and to the same extent. Generic makers must also meet the same manufacturing quality standards. That is why the FDA describes approved generics as working the same way and providing the same clinical benefit as the brand.

What Can Be Different

Inactive ingredients, such as fillers, coatings, and dyes, can differ, which is why a generic may not look like the brand-name pill. For most people that changes nothing. If you have a known allergy or sensitivity to a dye or filler, mention it so your provider and pharmacy can check the specific product.

Generic sildenafil and tadalafil are made by more than one manufacturer, so your pill can change color or shape between refills even though the medication has not. If a refill looks different and you are unsure, your pharmacist can confirm it is the same drug and strength.

Same Drug, Same Rules

Because the active ingredient is identical, the warnings are too. Never take either with nitrates (such as nitroglycerin) or riociguat, because blood pressure can drop dangerously. Use caution with alpha-blockers and other blood pressure medicines. Common side effects include headache, flushing, indigestion, and a stuffy nose, and tadalafil can also cause back or muscle aches. Get medical help right away for an erection lasting more than 4 hours, sudden vision loss in one or both eyes, or sudden hearing loss. Why Someone Might Still Choose The Brand

Some men simply prefer the name they know, or want the same-looking pill every refill. Those are personal reasons, not medical ones. By the FDA's standard, choosing the generic does not mean choosing a weaker medication.

Where To Start

Whichever you lean toward, a licensed provider reviews your history, medications, and heart health before prescribing. That matters: the American Urological Association's guideline on erectile dysfunction notes that ED can be a marker for underlying cardiovascular disease. If you are deciding how often to take tadalafil, our guide to Cialis daily vs. as-needed covers the two ways it is prescribed.

This guide explains general information and is not medical advice. It doesn't replace a licensed provider reviewing your own history.
